All Eyes on Vegas: Respecting the Journey, the Role and the People

By acknowledging and valuing the contributions of those outside the organization, leaders can create a positive and lasting impact within the broader community.

The global spotlight is currently fixed on Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, as the anticipation builds for Super Bowl LVIII's clash between the reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the San Francisco 49ers.

In the NFL, all 32 teams aspire to reach the pinnacle of Super Bowl glory, lifting the Lombardi Trophy on a Sunday that echoes through history.

However, for the majority of teams, the harsh reality is facing season losses and transforming them into organizational lessons. These lessons are the stepping stones toward meaningful future wins, a relentless journey that starts anew each season from ground zero in pursuit of excellence in climbing the treacherous mountain of competition.

As leaders, whether at the zenith of our industries or navigating through challenges, there's a universal lesson to be learned.

Sandra Douglass Morgan, a visionary and trailblazer with over two decades of leadership spanning sports, gaming, legal and corporate sectors, exemplifies this.

Appointed by Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis in July 2022, Morgan made history as the first Black female team president in the NFL.

"I realized, at that moment, that this job is much bigger than me,” she said at the time. “It's giving people hope and visibility and optimism that this is something you can strive for."

Morgan's advice for navigating uncertain career times is applicable across a range of industries.

"My No. 1 piece of advice for anyone trying to make it in sports, business, or any other industry, is to respect others," she said.

Firstly, Morgan advocates for respecting the institutions we serve, emphasizing the importance of understanding and upholding the values integral to an organization. This respect applies whether you're in the C-suite or an entry-level position.

Secondly, she underscores the significance of respecting peers and colleagues within the organization. This involves fostering accountability and a commitment to excellence, recognizing that collective success stems from a culture of collaboration and trust.

Lastly, Morgan emphasizes the crucial need for leaders to respect the communities and individuals they engage with, promoting upliftment and empowerment. By acknowledging and valuing the contributions of those outside the organization, leaders can create a positive and lasting impact within the broader community.

In the ever-evolving landscape of sports, business, and leadership, Sandra Douglass Morgan's journey and advice stand as a testament to the transformative power of respect.

Whether at the helm of a sports franchise or navigating the challenges of another industry, the journey of leadership and success is not a solitary climb but a collective ascent, built on the foundation of respect for institutions, colleagues, and communities.

As we witness the culmination of another NFL season at Allegiant Stadium this Sunday, let’s carry the leadership lessons from this season forward, ensuring that our paths are not only marked by personal achievements but by how we respect, care for, and influence those we lead.
