True Brotherhood and Camaraderie

Nick Faldo shared a true brotherhood with his golf colleagues, and it has four key lessons for us.

Among the common questions people ask are: What does a winning culture look like? How do powerful teams with sustainable cultures really behave?

These are certainly fair to ask, but the answers are often difficult to articulate. Explaining becomes much easier when a video appears with tangible evidence of what's needed to establish a winning culture.

In this video, Sir Nick Faldo says goodbye to his golf announcing teammates, Jim Nantz, Frank Nobilo and Ian Baker-Finch. The goodbye for Faldo is emotional, so much so that he becomes overwhelmed. Once he regains control with the help of his teammates, he sheds light on why this group was so successful.

Like a rock-and-roll band, these four men were tightly arranged, perfectly tuned and always in rhythm. Each played his role for the others, disregarding outside attention and paying little mind to what social media had to offer.

They felt love and compassion for one another wrapped around their call of duty. Their mutual love was real, obvious and genuine, which is why they built an amazing working culture.

When a great culture operates, it demonstrates preferences in four areas, with each one highlighted in the above video.

  1. A Sense of Community. A sense of community is an important part of life. We need to feel like we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. A sense of belonging and a sense of responsibility can lead to more positive outcomes in people’s lives. Each man is genuinely happy to share this moment with Faldo, and hates to see him leave their family.

  2. Friends First. Friends first is a slogan for life that places friendship and the pursuit of happiness above all other goals. The idea behind this is that the goal of our lives should not be to make money or to accumulate material possessions. Rather, we should focus on building friendships and being happy, which then leads to positive results. It’s clear from this video that these men are close friends.

  3. Trust. When a culture is built on trust, not from words or slogans, but actions, there is no limit to what can be achieved. Each man in this video trusts the other to do his job with supreme professionalism and dedication.

  4. Caring for One Another. Care for one another is a fundamental human need. It is a responsibility that we all have to look after the people around us. In watching this video, it's clear that each man cares for the others with great admiration.

Sir Nick will head to his ranch in Montana and start his next chapter, but he leaves behind a camaraderie that profoundly impacted him.

After a lifetime as an only child, Faldo finally experienced what life was like with brothers who, as is evident in the video, clearly changed his life.
