In this week’s Saturday Blueprint, we explore what it means to sustain excellence through continuous learning, lead with a mindset of service and empowered wholeness, and wake up each day with gratitude—recognizing that every day is a gift and an opportunity to impact lives.
From cultivating character and culture to embracing the courage to evolve, these insights serve as a powerful reminder: transformational leadership begins with who we are—not just what we do.
…
On Sustaining Excellence:
One of the keys to excellence is never thinking you know everything. I’m always watching others—learning from younger coaches, older coaches, and anyone who does things in a way that makes me reflect and grow. While I can be stubborn in my ways, I’ve never been unwilling to adapt if I see something worth incorporating.
Sustaining excellence comes from continuous learning, but also from deciding early on who you want to be and what’s important to you. For me, that’s always been about player development. I’ve coached at a K-12 school throughout my career, and watching young athletes grow into who they are—both on and off the court—has always been a priority.
Another lesson I learned early is the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people. Knowing basketball or being a great player matters less than building a culture with high-character individuals. Players treat each other well on the court when they have strong relationships off the court. Culture is built beyond the game, and when you get that right, success follows.
On Principles of the “Service Mindset”:
The service mindset is not about hierarchy; it’s about humanity. It’s about focusing on creating a culture where others can thrive and grow, where their voices are heard, and where their contributions matter. Ultimately, it’s about leading with the belief that leadership is not about personal gain but about collective progress.
When we embody this, we empower not only those we lead but also ourselves to achieve something far greater than we could alone. The key principles behind this mindset begin with a deep and consistent investment in the hearts, minds, and souls of the people we lead.
Leadership is about elevating others, showing up with empathy, and fostering trust. It requires awareness, a relentless pursuit of truth, and the courage to be honest — even when it’s difficult.
…
On Empowered Wholeness:
You don’t have to choose between being a strong career woman and having a family—you can be both. You can be a wife, a mother, and a powerhouse in your profession, making an impact on the world. Life isn’t about walking a tightrope and always making the “right” decision. It’s about embracing experiences, good or bad, with an open mind because every moment shapes who we are meant to become.
If you feel strongly about something in your heart— effing fight for it. Be open to saying yes to opportunities, even if they scare you or seem uncertain. Sometimes the most meaningful growth comes from taking risks, learning through challenges and simply saying yes to life.
At the end of the day, life and leadership is about trusting yourself, knowing your worth, and having the courage to walk your own path.
On “Every Day Is a Gift”:
Every time I retweet Jon Rothstein’s “Every Day Is a Gift,” it serves as more than just a routine gesture—it’s a personal mantra. It’s a simple yet profound reminder to embrace each day with gratitude, to see every moment as an opportunity, and to never take time and life for granted.
Life moves fast, and it’s easy to get caught up in the pressures of work, competition, and the daily grind that we forget to cherish the gift of life. But this phrase keeps me grounded. It reminds me that no matter what challenges come my way, every sunrise brings a fresh chance to grow, impact others, and make the most of the time and opportunity I’ve been given to live, love, inspire and serve.
