The Power of Paying It Forward: The Ripple Effect of Kindness

By giving without expecting anything in return, we learn the true value of kindness, which far outweighs anything we could receive.

Struggling was a common experience for comedian Pat Morita as he navigated the tough terrain of Hollywood. Morita was desperate to find consistent, paying work, as well as a place for his ever-growing family to live. With his wife pregnant and expecting any day, he was informed by his landlord that his rent would increase from $400 a month to $850—clearly a sign that the owner wanted him gone.

While searching for a new home, Morita found the perfect place for his family. However, there was one problem: he was short $3,500 for the down payment, and the closing day was only four days away.

With no one left to ask, he decided to turn to his friend and mentor, comedian Redd Foxx. Foxx was the star of Sanford and Son, a popular television show in the 1970s. Having received numerous breaks from others as he climbed the ladder of comedic success, Foxx understood the importance of helping a friend in need.

Morita and his wife drove to Foxx's home to ask for help. After some small talk, Morita launched into his pitch. He promised to repay Foxx, offering to work off the debt through chores or special appearances on Foxx's show. He assured Foxx he would pay interest—he would do whatever was necessary.

Foxx listened and then began moving his hands all over his body, joking that he didn’t carry small change. Then, he asked his secretary to bring his checkbook. While filling out the check, Foxx told Morita, “I don’t want to hear about no papers, no interest, no IOUs, no nothing. So, you want to pay me back? I know you’re going to make it one day, son. You do this for somebody.”

Morita did make it. And he also fulfilled his promise to Foxx—he paid it forward.

Paying it forward is the act of doing something kind for someone else, especially to inspire them to help others in return. When we engage in even the smallest act of kindness, we uplift both others and ourselves. By giving without expecting anything in return, we learn the true value of kindness, which far outweighs anything we could receive.

To enrich our lives, we can practice the following acts of kindness:

  • Perform Small Acts of Kindness: Hold the door for someone, compliment a stranger, or help someone carry their groceries.

  • Volunteer Your Time: Offer your skills or time to a local charity or community organization.

  • Pay for Someone's Meal or Coffee: Cover the bill for the person behind you in line at a café or restaurant.

  • Share Your Knowledge: Mentor someone or share your expertise to help others grow.

  • Donate: Contribute money, food, or clothing to charities or community projects.

  • Write a Note: Send a letter or card expressing appreciation or encouragement to someone who may need it.

  • Support Local Businesses: Shop at local businesses and promote them on social media.

  • Help a Neighbor: Offer assistance with yard work, errands, or other tasks they might find difficult.

  • Create Care Packages: Assemble and distribute care packages for those in need in your community.

  • Participate in Random Acts of Kindness Day: Encourage and engage in acts of kindness through community events.

Remember, even the smallest gesture can make a significant impact!
